Adobe splits composition and look into two Firefly reference tools

The image

The documents at hand are two Adobe Firefly help pages, "Match image composition to reference image" and "Reference images for styling", both marked "Last updated on Jun 16, 2026" and read here through Wayback Machine snapshots taken that day after the live pages returned an access error. Each page shows a reference photograph alongside generated variations: one page pairs a reference's outline with new images sharing its arrangement, the other pairs a reference's surface qualities with new images sharing its look, both drawn from Adobe's own product screens rather than an outside production.

What the documents show

The Structure Reference page states its own scope precisely: "Composition refers to the structure of an image and how the visual elements and subjects are arranged within the frame," and names "outline and depth" as "two essential aspects that Adobe Firefly considers while matching the structure of a reference image." It instructs a user to expand a Composition option, upload a structure reference image, and "adjust the Strength slider to control the adherence to the reference image." The Style Reference page, read separately, describes a distinct path — a "Reference option under the Styles section" — and states the feature "lets you use an existing image to guide the look and feel of generated image variations," offering curated categories such as "3D, Landscapes, Lighting effects, Texture" as alternatives to an uploaded photograph.

Production context

Read editorially, a documented split between a structure control (outline and depth) and a style control (look and feel, via curated or uploaded imagery) lets a design or advertising workflow hold a locked composition — a product's placement in frame, say — while iterating on surface treatment separately, or the reverse. Adobe's own use-case list for Style Reference names graphic design, branding, content illustration, fashion concepting and product design as documented applications, which the entry treats as Adobe's stated intent rather than as evidence of what any specific commercial project used.

Reference versus imitation

Neither page claims exact reproduction: the Structure page ties its slider to "adherence," a matter of degree, and the Style page frames its output as generated "variations" guided by a reference, not a copy of it. A workflow that uploads a specific photograph as a structure or style reference remains bound by whatever rights that photograph carries; Adobe's help pages document the mechanism for conditioning generation, not a clearance for the uploaded source image, a distinction its own pages do not settle.
