Kodak's data sheet fixes 500T's exposure index, not its look

The document at hand is Kodak Publication No. H-1-5219, the technical data sheet for Vision3 500T color negative film, stocks 5219 and 7219, dated on its own pages to March 2022. It is a manufacturer's specification, not a photograph: pages of exposure tables, storage temperatures, warm-up times and spectral curves rather than any single frame. Kodak's current product page for the same stock, retrieved on 16 September 2026, supplies the marketing description that sits alongside it.

What the documents show

The data sheet states the exposure indexes directly: 500 at tungsten, 3200K, and 320 at daylight when shot through an 85 filter. It specifies a proprietary Dye Layering Technology said to reduce grain in shadow areas and a Sub-Micron Technology said to extend highlight latitude by two stops, both named as Kodak's own product features rather than independently measured claims. It lists storage temperatures, warm-up times by film gauge, and directs processing to ECN-2 chemistry, citing Kodak's own further publications for the solution formulas. It includes an rms granularity curve and spectral sensitivity and dye-density curves, with an explicit note that these figures represent tested production coatings and do not apply directly to a particular box or roll. The product page adds suitability ratings for shooting conditions, day exterior, day interior, studio, limited light, that the technical sheet itself does not phrase in those terms.

Production context

This next observation is editorial. A tungsten-balanced exposure index of 500 is a working constraint for a cinematographer choosing between available light and required stop: it says how much light the negative needs, not what color or contrast a scene will carry once processed and printed or scanned. The documented ECN-2 processing step and the DI-oriented highlight latitude both point to a stock designed to be finished digitally as much as photochemically, consistent with the data sheet's own reference to digital intermediate dodging and burning.

Reference versus imitation

The data sheet does not claim a look for Vision3 500T beyond its measured curves; describing the stock as having a particular color signature would be an inference from the document, not a statement it makes. Citing the exposure index and processing chemistry when discussing a production's choice of stock is a documented, checkable fact; describing a film's overall visual character as simply shot on 500T substitutes a product name for the grading, lighting and lab decisions the data sheet explicitly leaves open.

• Is a claim about a film's look attributed to the film stock, or to the lighting and grading choices made with it?
• Does the citation distinguish Kodak's own performance claims from independently measured results?
• Is the data sheet's publication date noted, given that Kodak revises these documents over time?

Together the data sheet and product page establish documented technical characteristics of one film stock. They do not establish that any image made on it will look a particular way; that depends on exposure, processing and grading decisions the manufacturer's own literature leaves to the production.
