Metropolis credits three designers, not one director's vision

The Murnau-Stiftung's own film record, the rights-holding foundation's living database entry for the title, states a German premiere date of 10 January 1927 and an original length of 4,174 metres, roughly 153 minutes.

What the documents show

The two catalogues agree on the design credit: the Murnau-Stiftung's record lists Bauten, sets and production design, to Otto Hunte, while filmportal.de's fuller credit block, sourced explicitly to the Murnau-Stiftung and the DFF, names all three of Otto Hunte, Erich Kettelhut and Karl Vollbrecht under that same heading, alongside Kettelhut's separate credit for matte-painting trick work and technical consultation. Director is confirmed as Fritz Lang and cinematography as Karl Freund on both records. Neither catalogue entry itemizes which specific design drawings survive versus which elements of the visual record rest on later reconstruction; both function as living rights-and-credit databases rather than restoration research notes, and this entry does not claim more detail than they state.

Production context

The Murnau-Stiftung's record notes the film exists today in a restored version, referencing a 2012 DVD and Blu-ray reissue, and filmportal.de separately credits conductor Frank Strobel with a reconstructed and synchronized version of Gottfried Huppertz's original 1927 score for that restoration. That the music required reconstruction, per filmportal.de's own credit line, is a documented fact about the film's incomplete transmission across nearly a century; by contrast, neither source states that the credited set design itself required equivalent reconstruction, so this entry treats the Bauten credit as applying to the 1927 production as originally built, not to a restoration-era addition.

Both catalogues name three specific credited designers rather than attributing Metropolis's monumental Expressionist skyline to Lang alone, and the surviving still is credited to a named photographer and archive rather than presented as an anonymous frame grab. A reference user citing this production still should carry the same credit line, Horst von Harbou for Deutsche Kinemathek, rather than treating a screenshot of the restored film as equivalent to the original photographic record held by the archive.
